Is there a new Christmas Spirit?21 Dec 2017
What is the Christmas spirit?
Perhaps it's the circle of friends that I keep? Though I feel there is a move away from meaningless gifts this Christmas? The drive of years past to "shop till you drop", is it ending?
It's encouraging to see people opting for a holiday or camping trip together rather than a shopping frenzy. Good ifor reducing waste and our mental well being. Christmas can be a time of loneliness, so can we give the gift of our time? Using the day / week to spend time together without the exchange of things is a great idea.
Are more and more people moving towards the “experience” gift, Secret Santa, or not doing presents at all? What is your family doing?
Memories of Christmas for me are always about planning the meals, cooking together, eating together, going to the beach, playing cricket, camping, and even doing the dishes and talking. The gifts I can recall are few and far between. A wetsuit top I was given by my partner’s sister and her husband, one of the few memorable ones.
This Christmas why not invite someone who might be alone to a game of cricket or a trip to the beach / snow (depending on where you live)?
Some more tips
- Avoid as much plastic as you can by shopping at a farmer’s market or bulk food store
- Keep the left overs going for days or ask if you can feed the neighbour’s dog if you don’t have one and, Compost
- Do experiences (restaurants, holidays, a camping trip) tick off peoples bucket lists for them
- Invite someone over who may be alone this christmas or volunteer for an organisation like the Salvation Army.
- Give the gift of YOU! And say “this year my gift to you is, ME”.
